根據日媒報導，有知情人士表示鴻海集團正在研發智慧型手機用玻璃機殼，為的就是要配合2017年版的iPhone，以強化在蘋果供應鏈中處於不敗地位。
報導還指出，鴻海已從2015年就開始玻璃機殼的研發，更預估2017年版iPhone還會改用OLED面板，為了與三星爭奪地位，鴻海也已積極收購夏普，並著手研發研發OLED面板。
對於2017年新一代iPhone的功能與外觀，外界傳言不斷，預期將做出大幅度修改，另有國外網站科技專欄作家指出，【博客來排行榜歷史事件推薦書單】2017年將是蘋果iPhone推出滿十周年，有機會推出大改版的「十周年」紀念機版本，希望藉此帶領蘋果走出智慧機市場銷售逐漸衰弱的困境。
